S.C.X.#1/Marymoor Park

Today was race #1 of the Seattle Cyclocross Series and it took place at Marymoor Park in Redmond surrounding the velodrome.
Kristi, Holden, and I were up at 4am and on the road by 5, as we left Lake Chelan following a great wedding on Saturday night. We made good time and arrived at the race by 8:00. The day brought everything from rain, to some sun, and a whole lot of gusts and sustained winds.
In the Masters Men's race Berg got a great start to lead out the field up and around the velodrome with teammate Kelsey right on his wheel. Things were looking good until a clipped pedal in a tight uphill off-camper caused Berg to slide out which also caused Kelsey to bobble and lose a few spots. Things settled in and Kelsey finished with a solid 5th place. After several entanglements with wind blown course tape, Berg lost some more spots on the last two laps and came in 12th.
For the Women's race, Mel Lewis, and Kristi Berg started off doing some work together to bridge an early gap set by the top three women. Berg faded back unable to contend and eventually came in 9th. Lewis continued her fight trying to chase down a 10 second gap to third place but finished solidly in 4th. "Mel" had some extra motivation today since her Mom, Sheila, was here from the United Kingdom (Mel's homeland) to watch her daughter race her bike. It was great having her there today for the family support.
Thank you again to everyone in the team area for their support and protecting the tents when the wind got crazy. What a great group.
Next race: MFG#3 in North Bend.
