M.F.G.#3/North Bend

Sunday we raced round three of the MFG Series at Mountain Meadows Park in North Bend, right underneath Mount Si. We new the day would be good when team rider Kristi Berg brought in a "team" cake for everyone! Yummy!
Cycle U - PopCap riders Melanie Lewis and Kristi Berg started things off right for the day in the Elite Women's race. The girls got going well on the bumpy yet fast, slightly rolling, horse pasture of a course thanks to running some brand new Dura Ace C35 tubular wheels with new tubulars recently glued up. A big thanks to Shimano for the "treat". This helped smooth things out a little for them and kept the cornering fast. Lewis and Berg fought things out with the other women of what has become a very talented field of elite women riders that is twice the size of even last year. Mel raced superbly, looking very smooth over the course and took a fantastic 2nd place. Kristi did what she could while carrying a head cold, but feeling better with her back injury and finished a respectable 6th place.
For the Master Men, Sean Kelsey, and Chad Berg got a great start, and avoided ugly initial congestion as the course began to twist and turn. Kelsey stayed in a front chase group and pulled off a very well earned 3rd place. Berg was riding in 10th for the majority of the race, when some shifting problems forced him to go into the pits with two laps to go. A quick and efficient bike change by team mechanic, Justin Claasen, and teammate Melanie Lewis got Berg going again and he finished the race in 11th place.
We look forward to posting the current series overall points after this race and how our Cycle U - PopCap riders are stacking up. We are just waiting for the tallies. Things are looking good for us.
A big special thanks to team mechanic Justin, for doing a super job in the team area, and the pits today. He is quickly learning and embracing the "pit life" as a cyclocross mechanic and we are glad to have him before, during, and after the race. We are thankful to have him.
